PERSHING CHESS – COOL MOVES, LOTS OF FUN

Welcome to the Pershing Chess Club!

Pershing Middle School has one of the best chess programs in the state thanks to the great efforts of John Nguyen, former teacher at Pershing.

Our new sponsors this year, Coach Yolanda Hargrove and math teacher Jeff Rimkus, continue in Nguyen’s tradition of chess—first and foremost—as fun!

We meet 2-3 times a week, depending on your membership level.  We try to attend about one tournament each month, which lets us try our skills out against other schools.  We are excited that both the State and National competitions are in Houston this year, and we will be attending those as well.

Come try us out!  You can come a few times (for free) to see if you like it.  Joining is simple: you just download the registration form, fill it out, and bring it to our next meeting with your payment.

General Members – MON & FRI, 7:30-8:30 a.m.
Learn to play chess, then test your skills against other members in fun play and mini-tournament play.  Join us for Club parties and other fun events.  Get a free t-shirt when you register by Sept. 28.  Fee is $60 for entire year, which covers equipment, (t-shirt, if applicable), sponsor incentives, parties, prizes and awards.

Masters Members – MON & WED & FRI, 7:30-8:30 a.m.
These members not only get an extra day of chess, but they receive chess instruction on most Wednesdays from National Chess Master Jeff Ashton.  Learn strategies and multi-level thinking.  Masters Members enjoy paid registrations to the state and national competitions, plus all the usual Club parties and other fun events.  Get a free t-shirt when you register by Sept. 28.  Fee is $250 for entire year, which covers training fees, sponsor incentives, registration fees, equipment, parties, prizes, and awards.
